Proper Fuel for Your Workout

Posted by

You have taken the time to plan a workout and found the time to make it happen, but what should you eat before you exercise? There are a lot of differing opinions on this topic because it truly depends on the person and what type of exercise you will be doing. Here is a quick guide of how to fuel you body prior to exercise.

If it’s been two hours or more since your last balanced meal, then you should eat a small snack approximately one hour before you exercise to make sure you are able to complete your workout. This snack should be a combination of carbs and a little protein and around 200-250 calories.

This is all great, but what kind of snack should you eat? Here are some ideas:

  • A smoothie that contains both fruit and vegetables
  • Greek yogurt (you can add fruit and nuts to it)
  • Rice cakes with nut butter
  • Fruit and nuts
  • Apple with nut butter
  • Hummus and vegetables

Your body needs carbohydrates to fuel your working muscles and protein to build and repair those muscles.
